Visitors to the area are treated to a variety of experiences, as the illustrations show. From tourist towns like Gatlinburg, Tennessee, to a North Carolina mountaintop wonder like Kuwohi (formerly Clingmans Dome), a trip to this region bestowed memorable adventures well worthy of capturing on a cool displayable plate. Manufactured in Taiwan and distributed by a company called Carrib, this mid-century treasure has a built-in hanging mechanism with a green plastic cord that is probably as old as it is. The crackled surface is not from age, however. It was designed to lend the melamine-type material out of which the item is made the appearance of ceramic porcelain. The transferware colors pop, and the pictures around the rippled, scalloped rim especially stand out. Dogwood is a regional state flower and pine a regional state tree. The land was originally First Nation tribal territory, notably Cherokee, most of whom were forced from their homes in 1838 as part of the Trail of Tears western relocation. Great Smoky Mountains National Park was established in 1934, and the small Eastern Band of Cherokee people that had been allowed to stay remained on the Qualla Boundary lands, a 56,000 acre area in western North Carolina. As of the time of this plate’s manufacturing, ‘authentic’ Indian sites were promoted as tourist attractions in an often obtuse way. This simple image of a teepee and warrior, while arguably inaccurate, was at least understated. [Condition: Used Very Good. No cracks or chips. A little blurring of transferware type, yet still legible.]

Condition: Used Very Good.
Local / Regional Attractions.
Dimensions: 8” diameter / 6 oz

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0723/3264/0513/files/great-smoky-mountains-melamine-plate-01-2144.jpg?v=1770245481
