This beautiful pillow features several of the civic attractions to be admired there, including the Westward Ho Hotel, where a traveler to the Valley of the Sun might once have stayed. An historic landmark, it opened as a first class luxury hotel in 1928, then in the 1980s transitioned to subsidized housing. Other buildings are a Public Library, the Court House (now the Mariposa County Old Courthouse), and the Arizona State Capitol Building, the original design of which was done in 1901, eleven years before the territory’s 1912 attainment of statehood. Built with locally sourced materials, the building’s construction used granite from the Salt River and copper mined in the region. The remaining images on this cool toss pillow are of Phoenix’s Central Avenue - shown with cars from the midcentury - and, in a nod to natural attractions, the World’s Largest Sahuaro Cactus. (Note the spelling is with an “h” and not a “g”.) According to the Guinness Records, the World’s Tallest Saguaro, which toppled over in a 1986 windstorm, grew close to Phoenix. Yet it was armless and not like the one on our pillow. More likely this is ‘The Grand One’, a cactus that stood in the Phoenix metropolitan Cave Creek area. As much as we love cacti, though, this silky smooth souvenir cushion with its soft framing of red fringe will make a far more pleasant thing to hug. [Condition: Used Good.
