It mixes in new with the old, but sticks mostly with old; which is very much in step with that era across the South. No surprise that it contains a number of Confederate memorials, white Richmond having proudly boasted of these for most of the 20th century. But beyond that is a reminder of an even earlier, more American, event: the country’s founding. Richmond’s majestic George Washington monument downtown leads off the set, with the Washington statue in the state capitol building’s rotunda included on the back set. There are wonderfully graphic visuals that concentrate on boosting the city’s modern commercial character too: a view of the then modest skyline beyond the Mayo Bridge, the just completed 20-story building for the Medical College of Virginia, and a night time view of the Hotel John Marshall that seems to leap out of a Humphrey Bogart movie. And lest we forget his Richmond roots (known more so for his time in Baltimore), there is also a view of the Edgar Allen Poe house … Postcard accordion folders became ubiquitous in step with the popularity of motorized tourist travel. The first postcard folders trace to the early 20th-century. But it was in the mid-1930s when these fold-out mailers gained brilliant color. From that point through into the 1960s, and by way of far-flung post offices the nation over, a flood of these postcard folders found their way to friends and family from tourists taking in the diverse sites and attractions all across North America. The sharp commercial-art style illustration indicative of mid-century America, with covers printed on a tough linen paper, makes the souvenir sets of especially the late 1930s-1950s pop over half a century later—full-color photographs having arrived to these postcard folders by the 1960s … [Condition: Used Very Good. Never sent, this folder set is in great shape. There is hardly any wear to report even on the set’s folded edges.
