The 1976 Bicentennial was a very big deal. The year-long celebration prompted parades in every town of any size at all, as well as large national commemorations. Being the 70s, it also fell in the middle of a national moment that was not so great: post-Vietnam, post-Watergate, the continued conflicts of desegregation and busing, economic stagflation, oil embargoes, etc. In light of that, having something so momentous to celebrate was a welcome thing and was seen to—big time. Of course, commercial entities got in on it too, the iconic 5-point red-white-and-blue ribbon-wrapped star seemingly everywhere that year. Several American brewers that got in on the act seemed to take to it with earnest pride, portraying landmark national moments, towering historical figures, and projecting a general spirit onto their limited run can-designs that are still infectious all these years later.
