Vintage Itinerary Pack: 7 Items. Maps released even 3 or 4 decades ago are fascinating for the compare-and-contrast stories they tell about the growth of American cities. And for a city like Atlanta, that story is epic given its explosive growth over the last half of the 20th century. A set of 3 metropolitan area maps acquired in an estate sale lot speaks to a run of years (late-1970s through the mid-1980s) when the city’s rapid expansion, especially in relation to the city’s highway system and suburbs, hit its stride. But this became all the more fascinating when we acquired a much earlier Sinclair Gas Station map that shows Atlanta’s roadway system before any of the modern freeways had arrived, the city’s scope so modest when compared to just a few decades later! A guide put together by the Atlanta History Center and dropped into this pack adds great context to this city’s most eventful transit-centric timeline.
