MID-ATLANTIC.
Home Decor / Kitchen Decor, Decorative Tray, c. 1960s.
A truly unique piece, this rounded edge square souvenir tray for Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, was made by renowned mid-century giftware company, Couroc (of Monterey, California). Bethlehem itself was founded by Moravian settlers on Christmas Eve, 1741, had the first documented decorated Christmas tree in America, and was granted official designation as “Christmas City, U.S.A.”, in 1937. The star design on this satin black servingware piece is reminiscent of Moravian culture, and according to Couroc’s own guarantee its beautifully crafted finish is “Impervious to alcohol and boiling water.” But the Monterey tray maker itself was not impervious to wear and closed shop in 1998 just after celebrating 50 years in business. The Couroc name still has luster, however, and this striking souvenir product would be a boon to anyone’s collection.
