Home Decor / Kitchen Decor, Decorative Plate, Souvenir, c. 1960s.

The U.S.S. Missouri battleship features prominently on this transferware plate of the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, WA. The official memorial to this last battleship commissioned by the U.S. Navy is in Honolulu, Hawaii, where she is a Pearl Harbor museum ship, but ‘Mighty Mo’ moored in Bremerton from 1954 to 1984. She was the stage for the Japanese surrender to the Allied Forces on September 2, 1945, and during her thirty year stay at Puget Sound was a top tourist drawer to the shipyard. Also depicted on this souvenir plate are two bridge ways onto the Kitsap Peninsula, where the naval shipyard resides. The Agate Pass Bridge connects Bainbridge Island to the peninsula. Built in 1950, it replaced a car ferry service. The Hood Canal Floating Bridge comes over from the Olympic Peninsula, and at the time of its 1961 completion was one of the longest floating bridges in the world. At the bottom of the plate are the names of six other Washington state communities located on the Kitsap County peninsula. Annapolis, Port Orchard, Silverdale, Poulsbo, Bangor, and Keyport all have ties to the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. This plate is in very good condition and is a nice historical commemorative item for the Seattle, WA, region.
