MOUNTAIN WEST.
Shot Glass, Barware, Souvenir, c. 1990s.
Commemorate a visit to an American paradise with this colorful shooter. Four illustrations capture the grandeur and spirit of this Centennial State attraction. Rendered in a striking combination of green, blue, and gold are a bear’s paw print, a hiking boot, the ‘Balanced Rock’ geological formation, and the 14,110 ft. Pikes Peak. The indigenous Ute tribe referred to this snow-capped mountain as “Tava” or “Sun Mountain” as it was the first in the region to be illuminated by the morning rays of light. In 1806, a former American military officer named Zebulon Pike entered Ute lands on an expedition and, upon seeing the sacred site, referred to it as Grand Peak. Later it became associated with Pike himself. The Garden of The Gods public park is located along the Old Ute Trail, a route leading to Manitou Springs, which is an area long known as a destination point for its healing mineral waters. In 1879, 240 acres of property between Manitou and Colorado Springs was acquired by Charles Elliott Perkins, who did not live in the vicinity, but who had a friend that did. Perkins, a well-respected railroad executive, left the land in a natural state and informally open to the public while he went about buying more. In total, he bought 480 acres. After his 1907 death, his children worked in consort with the family of William Jackson Palmer - the local friend of Palmer’s who himself was a civic leader - to convey the entire tract to the city of Colorado Springs. In 1909, the site became a free public park. The Garden of The Gods, established to be permanently operational, grew over the years, and in 1995 opened a visitor and nature center. This is probably where a modern-day expeditioner acquired the colorful shot glass we are now offering. [Condition: Used Very Good.
