Wood Cartridge Box, c. 1940s.
Sold out of Hartford by Clapp & Treat, a firearms, fishing tackle, and accessories outfitters which operated from 1887 to 1991, this small bore ammo box once belonged to Bridgeport resident W. E. Glenn. Both Connecticut affiliations are marked in stamped letters, the first one outside on the front and the second one inside. Another name is hand printed on the top of the lid, but it is barely visible. It appears again more distinctly inside, just above Glenn’s address. Whether or not this cartridge case scrawler, whose name looks like P. Trischan (patrician?), also lived in the Constitution State isn’t clear. But as for the provenance of the item itself we can take a good shot. The 68 State Street address was the original location of Clapp & Treat, Inc. Thus this .22 caliber storage box likely sat on its shelves in the early/mid 20th century as the popular sports outfitters later moved to Farmington Avenue in West Hartford. Aside from the aforementioned writing, the finished surface is in nice condition, and the metal hasp and hinges are in good working order. It has holes bored for fifty bullets. All in all a quality piece of Nutmeg State history.
