There is absolutely no substitute for walking the trails, so we walked all the trails.” Here is immediate proof that this series of guides to John Muir’s “Range of Light” meant business, arming serious backcountry campers and day-trippers alike with all the right steps, plus sights and flora and fauna to see, plus background on the area, plus, plus, plus, etc. etc. etc. These pocket-sized guides were packed full of info and ready to hit the trail … The Merced Peak edition, #11 of the series, wraps up the southeast Yosemite Park “quadrangle” (an area 13 x 17 miles in size). Early chapters cover: “The Country, The History, The Park, The Geology, The Flora, The Fauna, The Climate,” all leading to, and in preparation for, detailed trail descriptions. Including a fold-out map that clearly marks day hikes vs. the more involved backcountry “backpack” trails, and gives a topographical visual to the guide’s descriptions, regional hikers of the 1970s were, indeed, well-armed … Along with a large cache of similar guides, we picked up this trail-ready handbook at the estate sale of a couple who had actually met while hiking, fell for each other, married, and hiked together all over the U.S., including many trips west from their Smyrna, Georgia home. The map traces their steps to Merced Lake and the High Sierra Campground in yellow highlighter. [Condition: Despite normal age wear to the paper cover, most likely from having been used on the trail, and a discolored (possibly sun-bleached) spine, the interior pages are in solid shape, with just a few bent edges. The map is in perfect condition, but for the mentioned highlighter mark.]
