Indianapolis Motor Speedway Shot Glass (Officially Licensed Product)

Much like the racing cars that run on its track, this Indianapolis Motor Speedway shot glass sports some pretty swift eye candy and promotional glamor. Slapped rakishly onto the prismatic surface is a sticker authenticating this barware item as being officially licensed by IndyCar, LLC, an auto racing sanctioning league headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. More prominently featured on the front is one of the coolest sports logos we at The Regionals have come across. This Wing, Wheel & Flag image is a spinoff (sorry) of an original Wing & Wheel one that has been in use by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway ever since its opening in 1909. According to a racing historian, who himself was not so fond of this logo update, the initial rationale for putting a wheel together with wings as a symbol was to brand The Brickyard as a facility made to cater both to automotive and aviation interests. George Phillips goes on to say that the logo - whose creator remains disputed - has morphed many times, most notably from 2009 to 2011 when the Speedway clocked 100 years. The version shown on our shot glass is the most recent logo as of this writing. It shifts from historical incarnations in that the wheel runs to the viewer’s right, not leftward. The wheel appears flatter and wider than how it has traditionally been drawn. The array of flags is an addition incorporated later over the 20th century. Fanning colorfully out along the top of the wheel, the racing flags incorporate all the possible stages of an event like the venue’s famous Indianapolis 500. Green means go, white means one lap to go, blue means faster cars are close, red means stop, black is a penalty flag, and yellow means caution.
