THE SOUTH.
Home Decor / Kitchen Decor, Decorative Plate, Souvenir, c. 1960s.
This for-decorative-use-only piece truly radiates out a warm southern glow with its lovely lapping rim ripples topped off by bright gold. It calls to mind being on a shoreline and experiencing the waves washing rhythmically in. The Mississippi River and the Gulf are important tourist draws for the state of Louisiana, and so often what makes water beautiful is the play of light on it, whether from the sun, the moon, or manmade sources. Drawn here amidst this dish’s own shimmering ripples are more attractions The Creole State has to offer. Aside from the water oriented ones such as Lake Charles, a Mississippi Steamboat, and the industry around Shipping, we find illustrations of the state bird, the Pelican, and the state flower, Magnolia. The Capitol building in the capital of Baton Rouge appears at the bottom, along with an estate in New Iberia that used to be a plantation in the Bayou Teche waterway region. The St. Louis Cathedral, seen on the left side of the plate, is located in New Orleans, the host city for a Mardi Gras parade known worldwide. Finally, topping the array of Louisiana’s things to experience, is the Audubon Memorial. There have rightly been ripple effects in recent times over John J. Audubon’s personal views, yet for anyone who finds it interesting that the state bird is not just the pelican, but the brown pelican, his naturalistic and artistic contributions remain worthwhile. [Condition: Used Very Good. No cracks or chips. Some scratches and wear on the gold rim. Transferware is excellent. No maker listed.]
