Wood Stash / Trinket Box, 2001.
This solid wood box, varnished a deep cherry, felt interior, and sporting a brushed metal nameplate is in “Like New” condition. The 72nd “midsummer classic” was played July 10, 2001, in Seattle, Washington, with the American League beating the National League 4-1. The roster rings as a pantheon of legends, witnessing the final All-Star games for two of the late-20th century’s greatest players: Cal Ripken, Jr., (Baltimore Orioles) and Tony Gwynn (San Diego Padres). The home town Seattle Mariners—who would tie a MLB record with 116 regular season wins that year—were well represented with Jon Olerud, slugger Edgar Martinez, and the great Ichrio Suzuki all in the starting line-up. (Suzuki would go on to win the AL MVP award for 2001.) It is also notable given the many stars who would appear that fall in one of the most memorable World Series of all time: Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte, and Mariano Rivera of the New York Yankees, Randy Johnson, Luis Gonzalez, and Curt Schilling of the Arizona Diamondbacks. In the wake of tragic and dislocating events of September 11, 2001, the thrilling 7-game World Series (won in the bottom of the 9th / game 7 by Arizona) was a much needed distraction for a still mourning nation.
