PACIFIC NORTHWEST.
Traditional First Nations Game, c. 1995.
The Pacific Northwest First Peoples are a diverse group which includes tribes in both Canadian and American regions. A portion of the proceeds from initial sales of the Beaver Tooth Game was given to support the United Indians of All Tribes, a foundation headquartered in Seattle. First manufactured in 1995, the booklet and game were products of a company named Skookum, which is a Northwest Native American word for well-made or strong. Skookum Jump Rope Company was based in Port Townsend, WA, and made a point of offering employment to the developmentally disabled members of the community. A decision to produce a series of authentic, indigenous games sprang out of a similar sense of caring for the region’s underrepresented. The Beaver Tooth Game sought not only to introduce people to the culture, lore and traditional pastimes of First Nations, but also to entertain them. We found a box set complete with the booklet and every piece needed to play. This includes four teeth ‘dice’ and 24 counting bones. The patterns on the beaver dice teeth show designs borrowed from the Tulalip Tribe of Washington State. The small circles are called women and the small arrows are called men. Instructions for playing are on a cardboard panel which lives in the tossing basket along with the game pieces. This was an exciting find for us, and we hope it finds a buyer who has a strong appreciation for a well-made toy that passes along important history as it plays into a child-like joy for games.
