MID-ATLANTIC.
Shot Glass, Barware, Souvenir, c. 1980s.

Propose a toast to The City Of Brotherly Love with this substantial barware item. Formed of thick, chunky glass, it pairs well with the Liberty Bell graphic. That bell, which originally went by the name The State House Bell, would be rung to call lawmakers into that building to vote and to gather Philadelphians together at its steps to hear readings of the news. An abolitionist publication first referred to the bell as the Liberty Bell in 1835 because of the biblical inscription on it that says “Proclaim Liberty Throughout All The Land Unto All The Inhabitants Thereof.” Yet the name would not catch on until much later. The bell - actually a local recasting of the original one made in London which had cracked on its first ring - developed a thin split in the 1840s after ninety years of heavy use. In 1846 metal smiths attempted a repair, but it did not take. Another fissure appeared that ran across the inscription from the abbreviation for Philadelphia up through the word ‘Liberty’. The bell was silenced permanently and, as of this writing, no one alive has heard it ring. Despite this, it still held a resoundingly powerful draw as a symbol. In the late 1800s, the bell left its place in what was by then known as Independence Hall and travelled out of Pennsylvania to be displayed across the U.S. at expositions and fairs. For a nation healing from civil war, this jewel from the brotherly love city served as a reminder of how Americans had fought together for freedom. The Liberty Bell subsequently came into its name fully, becoming an icon the world over for the battle against tyranny and enslavement. So enjoy imbibing out of this handsome square glass in honor of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, Philadelphia, PA, style. [Condition: Used Very Good.
