Salt Lake City, Utah, 2002 Winter Olympic Games Clear Shot Glass

The 2002 Winter Olympics were held in and around Salt Lake City, Utah, from February 8th through the 24th, with the Paralympic Games being played from March 7th through the 16th. This shot glass features the official logo used for the events, a stylized snow crystal with the colors found in the Utah landscape - yellow, orange, and blue. These brightly rendered threefold elements convey the games’ themes of contrast, culture, and courage. Also evident in the design is a recognition of the indigenous people of the region, as its pattern resembles the symbols found woven into their textiles. The blue shape on the logo’s bottom is representative of mountains capped in snowy white, and the yellow and orange shapes are the sun rising behind them. The designers also meant this to be a nod to the Olympic cauldron and flame. The motto for these games was “Light The Fire Within” to suggest there is an inner light within each of us that we can use to brighten the world. Not shown on this glass, but a nice bit of trivia, are the three official mascots for the 2002 Salt Lake City, Utah, Winter Games. A trio of animals native to the American West, a bear, a coyote, and a snowshoe rabbit, were used to represent words from the Olympic slogan. Powder the snowshoe rabbit was ‘Faster’, Coal the bear was ‘Stronger’, and Copper the coyote was ‘Higher’. These animals also hold great esteem in First Nation lore, and so were again fitting tributes to the area’s roots. The International Olympic Committee, or IOC, chose the location of the 2002 Winter Games in 1995. This shot glass carries a trademark from 1997, and so records the year those five iconic rings were officially linked in a single graphic to the sun, snow, and spirit of Salt Lake City.
