PACIFIC + SOUTHWEST.
Souvenir Decorative Pitcher, c. 1940s.

Useful for holding just the right amount of creamer for a Bay Area coffee brew, this collector’s piece is glazed to glow like a nugget of gold. Its stylized handle and curving lip are tipped with a darker brown to complement the transferware image of a San Francisco trolley on the front. The opposite side is embellished with the low relief of a trefoil and small berries. This does not resemble in any way a dahlia, the official flower of The City of Fog, so the pitcher itself clearly was not designed expressly for the 415 region. Yet the warm toasted tones of its glaze, combined with an illustration calling to mind the clang of trolley bells, create a longing to travel to the City of Love. As this pitcher-basin combo was made in Korea, it came quite a distance to get to a California gift shop. And you, too, might be thousands of miles away from the Golden Gate City. Adding this souvenir ceramic to your collection will let you roam there in spirit. So pour a little cream into your steamy drink and imagine sipping by the dock of the bay.
