THE SOUTH.
Home Decor / Kitchen Decor, Decorative Plate, Souvenir, c. 1950s.

Edged with magnolia, the Louisiana State Flower, this burgundy-hued dish is decorated with engravings of tourist sites from all over the Bayou State. Appropriately central to the design is the towering State Capitol building in Baton Rouge. Above this spreads New Orleans’s Pakenham Oaks, Versailles Plantation. Going clockwise from there is the St. Louis Cathedral, also in New Orleans, the Statue of Evangeline located in St. Martinsville, Greenwood Plantation in St. Francisville, and Bayou Teche, a storied state waterway. Coming back around to the capital city, the last image on the edge of the plate is of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. As unfortunate as the choice of heradling plantation culture is to this nonetheless beautiful mid-century work, that it includes an institution of higher learning rings of a hopeful tone. LSU certainly has had its issues with diversity, but over time has been doing the work to live up to the state motto imprinted on the back of this plate. “Union, Justice and Confidence” are ideals open to people living in every part and parish of the Pelican State. Souvenir plate made by Vernon Kilns of Vernon, California.
