THE SOUTH.
Home Decor / Kitchen Decor, Decorative Plate, Souvenir, c. 1950s.

Produced at a time when the Lone Star State was the largest state in the Union and Alaska was still a bit shy of its own 1959 admission, this hefty souvenir dish serves up a fittingly large selection of Texas draws. Atop them all is an image of the six flags tied to the governance of the region. They are Spanish, French, Mexican, Texas Republic, Confederate, and U.S. American. Founded as a state in 1845, Texas had a little more than a hundred years to revel in that ‘largest’ ranking. The stats on the back of this Vernon Kilns ceramic piece record the land coming in at 265,896 square miles, a total of 825 from east to west and 740 from north to south. Big indeed! And, as stated, the plateful of historic attractions artfully etched on the front of this item certainly do justice to that big vibe. Also shown are industries we associate with Texan largess. The derricks rising up at the center right are representative of crude oil extraction and production. And on the upper left the looming head of a steer marks the state’s iconic beef cattle brand. Talking of brands, that’s what the collection of hieroglyphic shapes placed around the dish rim are meant to depict. So whether you’ve called Texas home, or it simply is calling to you, rope in this amazing ceramic ware item and keep it where it belongs - at your own ranch, or cabin, or place of business - wherever it is you hang your ten gallon hat.
