“From the vast dimensionless grasslands of the central plains of North America to the dynamic salt sea of the Pacific Ocean there is an undulating world of ice and snow, rocky peaks and verdant valleys, a land of glaciers and rivers, of wild-life and flowers reversed timidly by sinuous railways and highways. This is the world of mountains …” So begins Richard T. Wright’s rich introduction to this impressive 1980s photo documentary, co-authored with fellow photographer Bob Herger. And though a steadily warming globe has changed some of his description of this amazing stretch of natural territory, the awe of witnessing this vast space—if only in book form—has not diminished an iota. Another line from the intro makes the case: “westbound travellers see (the Rockies) rising on the prairie horizon for hours, a seemingly impenetrable wall of stone jutting skyward …” with all the proof to back up the claim provided on page 20: an image of the Trans-Canadian Highway heading west from Calgary. Wow! Tracking the Canadian run of the Rocky Mountains out of the U.S. and across its western-most provinces, Alberta and British Columbia, we are treated to truly pro work: Jasper and Banff National Parks, the turquoise waters of Banff’s Peyto Lake like something of fantasy (a color so pure it seems not possible), the sheered-off seeming Mount Rundle and Valley of the Ten Peaks. We move west through Kootenay, Glacier, and Yoho, spreads of alpine meadow wildflowers, ice-encased tree limbs and blinding power-white banks a dozen feet thick. There are the various mountain passes and sheer cliffs, the skiers, climbers, backcountry campers, and of course the mountain goats, rams, bobcats and bears; the journey ending appropriately with a sunset shot taken from British Columbia’s Mount Robson. With some 90 full-color shots, many full page or dual-spread, this book may have you rushing to book a trip. A quick search pulled up any number of memorable-sounding tours; seeing is all by rail a Regionals’ staff certainty one of these days. [Condition: Used Very Good. Aside from some slight shelf wear on the dust-jacket and similarly slight scrapes on the full-color endpapers, the actual hardcover surface and all interior pages are in mint condition.]
