The image featured on this specialty region souvenir plate is of Soo Locks on the St. Marys River in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. “Soo” comes from the way the French word for rapids, “Sault”, is pronounced. The Soo Locks have been in place in one form or another since 1797, providing passage between Lake Superior and the other Great Lakes at the only connecting point. Currently, Michigan touts Soo as the busiest lock system in the world by cargo tonnage. And a few decades ago it was worthy to be the centerpiece image of this blue porcelain collectors plate. Other images of the Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, area adorn the edge, including “Old Town”, “International Bridge”, the vessel “S.S. Valley Camp”, “Tour Boat”, “Shrine of the Missionaries”, and “Fountain”.
