The slim size of this volume does not do justice to how packed full of the Cascades it is, filled cover to cover with beautiful color and black & white photographs by a list of noted nature photographers—including the world famous, Ansel Adams. The foreword is by no less than Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas, who was well known in his day as a naturalist and ardent conservationist of wild American lands. In addition, a section from author Harvey Manning’s preface steers into the kind of irreplaceable personal relationship that so many of us have gained via time spent exploring our national parks with family: “My parents fished most of the time, and I scrambled around digging holes in the sands and tossing rocks in the water and studying the construction of periwinkle shells. Sometimes I rode my father's shoulders right out into the middle of the river (Stillaguamish), and while he cast for steelhead I enjoyed the view of Whitehorse, the highest mountain in my world." Here is that impressive list of photographers: Ansel Adams, Philip Hyde, David Simons, Bob and Ira Spring, Clyde Thomas, John Warth … Along with a number of other trail guides and maps, this volume was purchased at the estate sale of a couple who had actually met (probably in the 1960s) while hiking, married, and went on to pursue their love of hiking together all across the continent. [Condition: Used Good — The cover shows the standard signs of wear, especially on its spine, this volume no doubt flipped through often. But aside from the spine and slight creasing on cover corners, the interior is in good shape, even with evidence of paper clip marks in the early pages. Luckily, none of this detracts from the amazing photography.]
