MOUNTAIN WEST.
Shot Glass, Barware, Souvenir, c. 1990s.
The skiing industry in the region around what would become the Vail Ski Resort in Colorado can be directly attributed to American military training. During WWII, the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division, which trained at Camp Hale, discovered a mountain with very good snow about fourteen miles to the north. They called the peak No-name Mountain. In 1962, two men from the division opened a ski resort at the base of that very mountain, which was located in Vail Pass - named after the designer of the highway going through the valley, Charles Vail. Pete Seibert, Earl Eaton, Harlie Higbie, and the others who established the resort, decided that Vail was a good name for it as well. Fast forward to 1989, the time period we think the barware piece we offer here might hail from, and Vail had built itself up to the point where it could host the Alpine World Championships. This was the first time the United States had hosted since the event was held in Aspen, Colorado, in 1950, and the first instance when coverage of it aired at a time optimal for European viewership. As a consequence, the 1990s saw huge increases in skiers coming to Vail from both near and far. Judging by the logo and font on this heavyweight prism shot glass, it probably came from a souvenir shop during that decade’s surge of new resort visitors. And the tourism business certainly did not go downhill from there. From its discovery as a no-name peak with good snow, Vail’s reputation grew until it was top notch among American resorts. It remains one of Colorado’s - and the whole mountain west region’s - most popular skiing destination points. Cheers to that! [Condition: Used Very Good.
