It was inevitable that we would run across buckets of items that did not fit nice-and-neat into our by-region catalog, from books to old maps and lines of vintage collectibles. At first, we avoided these items before we realized—well, that was less than smart—expanding our collections list by one to include this catch-all + multi-regional category. By rule, we only add an object or item to no more than two regions should the area require it. For instance, anything Great Smokies we drop into the Atlantic South (North Carolina) and South (Tennessee) regionals; while anything Pacific Coast First Nation we drop into the Pacific Northwest and Canadian regionals. But what about those crossing 3 or 4 or more regions (items related to the Oregon Trail, which crosses 4) and, of course, those that touch them all (most any publication about America’s National Parks)? We quickly corrected the err of our ways to include all those items with general regional importance. For despite the amazing diversity to be found region-to-region, or even the rich diversity to be found within regions themselves, in the end this is one land from coast to coast “made for you and me.”
