CANADA.
Kitchen Decor, Trivet (Cast Iron Stand), Souvenir, c. 1970s.

Presented in the shape of a teapot, this cast iron trivet frames a ceramic tile of Nova Scotian images. The province’s coat-of-arms appears at the upper left and a lobster dominates the center. The background on the coat-of-arms/shield is a Saint Andrew’s cross. Nova Scotia means “New Scotland” and the cross is from the Scottish flag. To differentiate it from the original it is blue on white and not white on blue. In the middle of the cross is the shield of the Royal Arms of Scotland. Canada has three provinces on the Atlantic coastline, including Nova Scotia, which is located almost exactly halfway between the equator and the North Pole. Small in area compared to its country’s sprawling counterparts, this province earns its playground nickname with a bountiful offering of ocean-based attractions. The lobster represents just how important the seafood industry is to Nova Scotia. Catching and exporting it drives the economy, of course, but the flavor of its distinct cuisine and culture makes the region a destination point for travelers. This trivet was no doubt sold in a shop that catered to tourists, and it continues to be reminiscent of the area. Interesting to note, however, that on the tile’s back it says “Made in Sri Lanka”. A product sticker further states that it was imported by a Montreal business called Barri-Shelli. So set your cuppa tea on a piece of well traveled serviceware and imagine gazing out over the water from New Scotland toward the shores of its predecessor. The condition of this item is very good except for some wearing of the letters at the bottom.
