Ray Cannon authored this picture-rich history, travel discoveries, fishing and adventure book. Originally published in 1966, our offering is from its 1969 fifth printing. Sunset Magazine was pivotal in producing Mr. Cannon’s works, and though published by Menlo, California’s Lane Magazine & Book Company, the cover sports an “A Sunset Book” label. The contents run the gamut of natural and social histories (some of the latter showing the prejudices of the time), taking the Sea of Cortez’s island and coastal areas region by region, twelve in all. Also featured is useful information for tourists on visiting, with a focus on fishing and small boat cruising. Author Ray Cannon was an actor as well, and his love of sports fishing off Baja’s coast began when he started filming pictures in California in the early 1910s. Notably he worked for director D. W. Griffith, an affiliation that might well be reflective of the aforementioned prejudices (Griffith having directed the unforgivably racist “Birth of a Nation” movie). What really holds sway here, though, is the trove of spectacular photographs, maps, and illustrations surrounding Cannon’s text. Impressive images of Baja, the Gulf of California, and the mainland coast leap off the mix of glossy and parchment-feel pages, a few of which have been noted on with a pencil. We did not erase these notations, as they, too, tell a story about where this travel volume has been and who might have owned it. A true vintage book find, it is otherwise in good shape.
